How Word Ladders Work: Rules, Par & an Example

Change exactly one letter per move, keep every rung a valid word, and search for a route that reaches the target at or below the puzzle's par benchmark.

A word ladder starts with one word and ends with another word of the same length. Change exactly one letter at each step. Every intermediate rung must be accepted by the active dictionary, and the final rung must match the target.

LexiD includes four-, five-, and six-letter ladders. The rule remains the same at every length; longer words simply create a different network of possible neighbors and dead ends.

Compare the start and target

Mark the positions that already match. They are useful anchors, but they are not always permanent. A valid shortest route may temporarily change a matching letter if that opens a more connected set of words.

Search from both ends

List common words one change away from the start, then do the same for the target. A bridge appears when the two groups share a word or contain neighbors that differ by one letter. Working backward often reveals a final step that is hard to see from the start alone.

Use word families carefully

Patterns such as -ARE, -ING, or a shared consonant frame can create several legal neighbors. They help only when the family connects toward the target; cycling through similar words spends moves without opening a new position.

Treat par as a benchmark

Par describes an efficient known route. It does not end the puzzle when you go over. In LexiD, a valid solve at or below par earns the strongest efficiency result, while a longer ladder can still finish and show where the route wandered.

Ask for a hint when the network disappears

A useful hint should preserve the current dictionary, avoid words already used, and respect the remaining route. LexiD records hints in the result so two solves of the same puzzle can compare both move count and assistance.

Valid three-move ladder

Change STONE into SHARE

The starting word is STONE, the target is SHARE, and the benchmark is three moves. Every rung must contain five letters and differ from the previous word in exactly one position.

Changing two letters at once

A familiar target can tempt a shortcut, but every adjacent pair of rungs must differ in exactly one position.

Using a word outside the dictionary

A plausible spelling is not automatically accepted. Every intermediate rung must belong to the puzzle's active reviewed word list.

Avoiding a temporary detour

The useful next word may look farther from the target. A changed letter can open a connected route that a direct-looking move cannot reach.
