Color sort strategy starts with one constraint: only the exposed top color can move. A legal pour goes into an empty tube or onto the same visible color, and the destination must have enough capacity for the moving run.

The puzzle is solved when every non-empty tube contains one color. Reaching that state depends less on any single match than on the order in which buried layers become available.

Keep one tube flexible

Treat an empty tube as working memory. It temporarily holds an exposed color so another layer can move. Before using the last empty tube, know where its new contents can go next; otherwise a legal pour can leave the board with no useful follow-up.

Reveal a destination, not just a color

Look beneath the segment you plan to move. The best pour reveals a color that can immediately join another stack or opens a tube that can become empty soon. Exposing an unmatched color may require another workspace tube and can stall a position that looked safe.

Consolidate without closing the board

Joining identical exposed colors reduces partial stacks and often frees a tube. But a completed tube also stops acting as workspace. Delay the final pour when its spare capacity is the only place that can accept a blocking color.

Recover from the first irreversible choice

Each tube holds two segments. Tube A contains red on the bottom and blue on top. Tube B contains blue on the bottom and red on top. Tube C is empty.

Filling the only empty tube

An empty tube is movable workspace. Occupying it with a color that cannot consolidate may remove the route to buried layers.

Matching colors automatically

A same-color pour is legal, but it may expose an unusable layer. Check both the destination and the new source top before moving.

Splitting a complete run

Moving a clean stack without a clear purpose spends capacity and increases the number of partial tubes that must be managed.
